Celebrating the ‘Wonders of the North’

Changemakers is supporting ‘The Wonders of the North Festival’, a festival being organised by young people for young people in North East England this summer. The Festival takes place from 27 July – 8 August and will give young people the opportunity to celebrate the ‘wonders’ of their region.

The Festival is part of Changemakers Future Cultural Leaders programme, which supports young people and cultural organisations to work together to develop collaborative creative projects that will benefit young people in their local communities.

Over the past few months ten teams of young people have been working alongside ten of the North East’s top cultural organisations to create a project or event that celebrates a ‘Wonder of the North’. The brief was “to find your very own ‘Wonder of the North’ and explore and celebrate this Wonder in the most exhilarating way possible.” The results have been impressive and ten exciting Wonders of the North events have been created for the Festival.

The main aim of the Festival is to raise the sense of belonging for young people in Newcastle, Gateshead and Northumberland to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Previous research has shown that young people within the region feel disengaged with London 2012 and it is the aim of this project to challenge these attitudes and motivate the young people of these areas to become passionate and engaged with such an historic event.
