Kamara Bennett is 18 and from Birmingham. She first came into contact with Changemakers when she was looking for an opportunity on the vinvolved website. “From that I was offered the chance to join the Youth Action Team and lead my own project,” Kamara explains. Her project, Sew Your Own, is a “positive response to the waste in our community, by educating young people on sustainability in fashion and textiles. “It has three strands; clothes collection, workshops on how to turn the collected clothing into new clothing, and fashion show which is imminent.  

“At the moment I have about 28 young people working with me. The project has definitely enhanced my leadership, planning and organisational skills, having to manage the project and the people,” says Kamara. “I would definitely recommend other young people to get involved. It’s given me a lot of opportunities, directly and indirectly, and a lot of confidence, knowing I can lead and manage a fairly large group of people.”
